Planning on learning to drive this year? We’ve compiled a handy list of everything you’ll need to help you along the way.

Provisional driving licence when you're learning to drive

Before you get behind the wheel, you’ll need a provisional licence in order to drive legally. To apply for a provisional licence, you’ll need:

  • an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
  • addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
  • your National Insurance number if you know it

You can apply on the official government website for £34 or apply via post for £45.

L-plates

Another legal requirement for learners driving in their car, is to clearly display L-plates on the front and the back of the car. So, if you're learning to drive soon, make sure you've got your L-plates ready! For the official requirements of the L-plates, visit the official government website.
